“Wounds that heal and cracks that fix…”

Despite constant reminders of how much most people don’t like Coldplay, I happen to think their music is brilliant, inspiring and meaningful.

Quit rolling your eyes you elite music lovers. I can have an opinion too.

To me, Coldplay is more than just music. This band taught me an important lesson and gave me a goal/passion in life I may otherwise not have.

What is that goal you may ask? No, it’s not to put other people to sleep with slow melodies and melancholy lyrics. It’s to educate the world about those that have been forgotten. Those who don’t have a voice. Those who work hard to give us things we want while they go without things they need.

You see, Coldplay has always been a supporter of Oxfam and it’s affiliate campaign Make Trade Fair. This became apparent to me after just being a fan for a few days. When Chris Martin (the lead singer) steps on stage you can see he is covered in Fair Trade reminders. Even his piano bears the logo. They mention the campaign almost every time they speak, actually go work hands-on with the organization themselves and educate their fans on cd covers, merchandise and during actual concerts.

In the beginning, I became a supporter of Make Trade Fair solely because I was obsessed with Coldplay. Meanwhile, I had no idea what Make Trade Fair actually was. After being asked an embarrassing amount of times what it was with no good response, I decided to actually find out some answers. What I found was the most amazing organization I have ever heard of, Oxfam International. Ever heard of Oxfam? Probably not. Should you learn more? Most definitely.

From the moment I learned about Oxfam I have wanted to be apart of the team. My dream is to work for Oxfam in any way…even if it’s just to clean bathrooms in their office. Unlike most organizations, Oxfam actually goes out in the world and does good. They are not passive and are not out to rob anyone. They simply educate the world on issues while doing what they can to promote change. It’s amazing stuff.

Oxfam’s issues include social injustice, climate control, poverty and fair trade. They operate in an impressive amount of countries. I wish I had the time and space to write volumes about Oxfam, but I don’t. I want to encourage you to go to www.oxfam.org and check it out. I think you will find it fun, educational, inspiring and will give you ideas of things you can to do to help. We are all citizens of the world, but not all of us have the same resources or opportunities. You can do so much with so little. If not now, when? If not you, who?

Just something to think about.

I will try to post more blogs about Oxfam and the issues they are working on. It really is interesting stuff.
